He became a tennis star in his time but this man was also a survivor of the Titanic disaster. The athlete reached the heights in sports by winning the U.S. National Tennis Championships in men’s singles. What was his life path? Read more on philadelphia1.one.

Early years

The birthplace of the future master was not America. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland. However, his parents were from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where their son would later go and stay until his death. A direct descendant of his father, as it turned out, was Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence of the United States.

Young Richard studied at a private Swiss boarding school. He was fluent in German and French.

The boy showed interest in sports in his youth. He first tried himself at playing tennis when he was only 12 years old. At that age, his father was his main manager and coach. He monitored the correctness of the serve and encouraged his son to improve his sports skills because he saw that he was talented.

Development of a sports career

Thanks to hard work and listening to his father’s advice, Williams took part in the Swiss championship and won in 1911. In 1912, the athlete submitted his documents to Harvard University and successfully entered it. There, he received a new title of intercollegiate champion not only in singles but also in doubles.

However, such success did not always accompany him. In 1913, Richard, already a champion in more than one game, lost to Maurice McLoughlin not once but twice. The first loss occurred at the Wimbledon Championships and the second at the U.S. Championships.

However, the man became famous thanks to his titles, which he won at the other US championship. He defeated Bill Johnston and McLoughlin in 1914. Later, he faced Bill Johnston again in 1916 and won a second time.

He was even able to defeat eight-time champion Wallace Johnson in 1912 and 1914. The game took place in his parents’ homeland, Pennsylvania. The place for the match was not entirely convenient because the field was not located on a special court but on the grass at the cricket club. However, the tennis player successfully overcame this obstacle.

The career had to be put on pause for a certain period because the First World War began. The man decided to take part in it. After his return, he continued his training, which led him to subsequent victories. The opponent at one of the games was the first racket in the world at that time, Johnston. He won this victory in the semi-finals. In the final, Richard competed with the fourth racket, James Cecil Parke, whom he also defeated.

However, the athlete did not stop. The next step in his career was the Olympic Games in 1924. This event was a challenge for him because he sprained his ankle. However, the man coped with it decently. Williams took the court, forgot about his pain and won the gold medal in mixed doubles.

The man decided to end his career at the age of 44. He understood that in the future he could not maintain his form and remain the same player as before. Age took its toll and all he had to do was accept that he had to leave professional sports and give way to the younger generation.

Titanic

Everyone knows the tragedy that took place in April 1912 on the Titanic liner. During the cruise, it collided with an iceberg, resulting in countless deaths. Richard Williams turned out to be one of those who was on board the giant. He lived with his father in the first class.

After the collision, Williams managed to save one of the passengers who was locked in the cabin. The man went to help and broke down the door. The athlete was reprimanded by the steward. He threatened Williams with a fine for damaged property. It seems that the employee did not understand the situation at all.

The athlete was trapped by the sinking liner almost to the very end. When the Titanic almost sank into the cold waters, the man and his father took a risk and jumped off it. Williams was lucky and was able to escape from a terrible death. However, his father remained floating in the black waters, as death took him after being hit by one of the sinkholes of the liner.

The man managed to get out because he swam to the nearest boat. Everyone who was there was sent to another boat that took them to a safe place. While the tennis player waited for help, he stood up to his knees in icy water. This led to severe frostbite and doctors even wanted to amputate his legs. He refused, understanding that he would not be able to continue his career. Instead, he got out of bed every 2 hours and tried to work on his trauma. Thanks to perseverance, he managed to do it.

The choice, which was made in the most terrible times, brought Richard Williams incredible achievements in sports. If he had obeyed the will of his fate and doctors, the world would not have seen this idol and professional.

The name of Richard Norris Williams may be familiar to many interested individuals.
